Recently, I heard someone use the term “child-like heart” and I pondered what that means.
After some quiet thinking, I realized a person’s heart is child-like when he or she is fully being, breathing, seeing, and feeling—wholly human. This state of existence reflects absolute innocence without self-centeredness. It’s just being—without motive or selfish intention. It’s life beaming outward without pulling anything inward. The spirit in a person with a child-like heart naturally glows.
We all marvel at the guilelessness and innocence we see in very young children. Everyone is born with a child-like heart. We start out natural, unaffected, genuine, and sincere—untouched by the stuff of life. Our hearts beat solely for the joy of being alive.
We want a child-like heart so we can feel our humanness without hurt. We want ongoing awareness and openness to being. We want to be without sadness, loneliness, anger, remorse, alienation, regret and other soul-sapping feelings. But few if any of us can sustain a child-like heart—at most, we experience moments of it.
It is hard to be fully alive when our heads, minds, and hearts are buried in our electronic devices and our busyness. Sometimes we slog ourselves down in details of the everyday, automatically rushing to do this or that. We try to do and be too much—living with an “adult-like” heart.
I am not sure how to keep a child-like heart. One thing I do know is that I won’t ever be able to do that until I pause my hecticness and just breathe and be. Please tell me what you know about a child-like heart.
Children are more in the moment and I will try to obtain that level of nowness~

Very true! It gets harder to be in the now as we add years to our lives. But it’s worth trying.
