Heart Sightings

HeartEyesWhen we keep our eyes in body and spirit open, we can see heart in our everyday lives.

I saw it twice this morning. As I power-walked the hilly streets in my neighborhood, I saw a neighbor watering plants in his yard. He wore old timey overalls with suspenders, and a big straw sunhat. He didn’t look up, so I paused. Watching him carefully guide the watering hose from plant to plant brought back dear memories.

I could “see” my dad’s Minnesota family farm and my dad or maybe his dad, watering the crops and tending to the daily chores. What a gift our family farm was and still is. Many years ago, it received a Century Farm Award, which acknowledges farms kept in a family at least 100 years. Our family still works it—great great great grandchildren keep the legacy going. That’s heartwarming!

As my walk ended, I paused by my mailbox at the street to hand a letter to the mail delivery person and receive my mail. She took the letter, gave me a stack of letters and packages, and drove off to the next mailbox.

Looking at the first envelop, I saw my neighbor’s name and address, so I trekked over two houses to “re-deliver” their mail. The whole stack was theirs. I rang the doorbell and handed it over. I heard a sound at the street and turned around. The delivery person had backed up the truck to ensure the mail was redelivered. It delighted me to see she really cared. The famous Pony Express Motto “The mail must go through.” came to mind and I saw heart in what she did.

Where have you sighted heart lately?

How wonderful that your family farm continues to thrive after all this time!

    Great post, as usual.

Thank you for your wonderful comment. Yes Victoria, it is a delight in my life. Dad and I had the honor of visiting it a few years before his death–an amazing and unforgettable experience.

Thanks for sharing that important “old timey thought.” Yes, you gotta have heart. It’s the only way to live.
